Washable nappies - in brief More detail here.
It's the 21st Century (in case you hadn't noticed).
So you know how clothes drying has moved on a bit from this. And how those state-of-the-art vehicles called cars tend to be preferred over horse drawn carts. And how computers don't take up entire rooms. And how women can vote nowadays...... Well nappies have also moved some way forward from the terry squares of yesteryear.
Terry squares are still available - there's actually nothing wrong with them at all and some people swear by them. But nowadays, nappies come in a wide range of styles, shapes, materials and colours. They are, in fact, lovely.
And yes, there is less poo involved in washables. Yes, you can put other clothes in the wash with them. No, you don't end up with poopy clothes and no you don't have to wash them at 90 degrees centigrade. Washing powders are quite advanced..... Aren't we lucky to be living in the 21st century!

FAQs
Won't I have a stinky bucket sitting around?Hardly. And far rather have one or two days of nappies in an enclosed bucketor wetbag than two weeks of pooey nappies festering in your bin.
|
Won't I be handling loads of poo?Definitely not, particularly if you use liners (recommended). The liner is fully degradable, goes in the loo (taking the poo with it), and the poo-less nappy gets washed. You don't have to touch it (although it won't actually kill you!).
|
Won't I use loads of electricity on drying?Don't use a tumble dryer. Just hang them on a rack. Or if you are short of space, get microfibre nappies (like fleece), which are nearly dry when they come out of the washing machine.
|
Aren't they really expensive?Initially they will seem expensive but in the long run they are cheaper. And they can be much much cheaper depending on which ones you buy and how many children you use them with. Many councils also run incentive schemes (vouchers up to £50 in some areas) which reduce the cost further.
