Myths Dispelled
When you think nappies you probably think Huggies or Pampers. Who do you think has the most money to spend on promoting their nappies - the disposable market or the small washable nappy producers? It's hardly surprising that there are myths out there that do not give a true picture of the benefits (environmental, financial etc) of washables. Have you really done your research?
Children have an impact on the environment. There is nothing we can do about that. But the environmental impact of washables lies in the washing and drying. There have been some pretty unrepresentative studies that claim that washables, once you have taken into account all the water/electricity/detergents, have just as much impact as disposables. HOWEVER: this was based on washing at 90 degrees centigrade, tumble drying all the nappies all the time, and an irresponsible choice of washing powder. These you can reduce yourself, and very easily. In fact - DON'T wash your nappies at 90 degrees. They can't take it and washing powders nowadays are effective at lower temperatures. And remember, with disposables, you have NO control over the impact they have. They are made using a grand array of plastics, chemicals and processes and are then only fit for landfill where they sit and sit and sit and sit......
Have a look around the web for more on this. And if you go for washables (do it!) makes sure you wash and dry them responsibly.
And did we say they were cheaper in the long-run?
